Blog Week 2- SIOP Model

The SIOP model is an approach for teachers in integrate content and language instruction for students learning through a new language (Echevarria, Vogt, & Short, 2017). According to this video, the SIOP model has been proven to work for all students, not just English Language Learners. In my personal experience, any approach that is used to assist ELLs, can be beneficial to all the students. This is because when you are working with ELL children, you are extra aware of showing the content to the students in multiple ways. This is tapping into the Universal Design of Learning (UDL). Providing content in multiple ways for students to learn is helpful to all students because you may use multimedia, such as videos or certain apps and photos. This helps all children visualize the content that is being learned.

I think the SIOP model has been so effective because of how it suggests differentiation across all eight components of the model (Echevarria, Vogt, & Short, 2017). Including language objectives into each lesson is also what makes the model very effective. The students are not only responsible for the content of the lessons, but of the language that they are using as well. This helps to develop their language abilities because it is part of the entire lesson. Also, tapping into children's prior knowledge is a key to success in any lesson in any content. This allows the student to make connections prior to learning the new content. This can help them to make connections and see how the content is important. The SIOP model provides many scaffolds for ELLs and for all other students. This is another reason as to why it is so successful. Providing sentence starters or language frames takes out the difficulty for the child to think of how to begin a sentence. This can often be the hardest part for all children. They have difficulty starting paragraphs or sentences. There are many aspects of the SIOP model that make this a great approach to use in all classrooms to benefit all students.

There are many journal articles, teachers, and videos that prove how effective the SIOP model of instruction is. In my own experience, I have used some of the components of this model. I have never been introduced to this model before, but now that I know about it, I realize that I already do some of this in my own classroom. When I am faced with a child who has difficulty learning, I always use visual aides and different types of scaffolds. Sentence starters and graphic organizers are very popular within my classroom. Also providing students with time to speak with other children is also an integral part of my instruction. This allows students to build and bounce ideas off of the other children.

This article provides evidence on the effectiveness of the SIOP model in a content taught classroom with ELLs.

This video explains from ELL students point of view the issues that they struggle with inside the classroom. It also explains how in the school research was performed, and proved how effective the model is.

The following video is a video that I found useful to explain each of the components of the SIOP model. It breaks down each component into simpler terms.

I am eager to use this model with my ELL students and to gain a deeper understanding of how to implement it on a day to day basis.
